Originally the idea of 'the tower' evolved simply through the primitive idea of stacking colours & stripes. I had been feeling like I had been overcomplicating things with my work & this was a way to just bring it back to basics. By stacking colours & stripes on top of each other, they naturally formed a visual representation of a tower.
I didn’t think too much about this idea of a 'tower' initially, other than it being a visual composition, in fact I actually dismissed it completely at one stage. But I became more intrigued by it the more I worked on it, so I started looking into the meaning & symbolism of the ‘tower’.
There are a couple of definitions for the word ‘tower,’ for example a tall, narrow building, either free-standing or forming part of a building such as a church or castle. But it was when I started looking into the symbolism of a tower, I discovered a connection that I may never have realised.

What better symbol of strength is a lone tower standing in it’s full power for all to see?
Just like the definition of a tower has several meanings; when it comes to symbolism, it also has various interpretations & is mentioned throughout history, within art, literature, religion, philosophy & psychology.
It was when looking at the pyschological aspect specifically that I began to see connections to my work. Although I love working on small pieces, I had been wondering if it was keeping me within my ‘comfort zone’. So with this series I set myself the challenge to work on a larger scale. As these towers started emerging & I came to realise how I could use them myself as a form of symbolism, it was like pieces of a puzzle started fitting together.
No longer just a visual composition, the tower has become a symbol for me on the importance of having belief in oneself. The importance of getting out of your comfort zone & not being afraid of standing out from the crowd. What better symbol of strength is a lone tower standing in it’s full power for all to see?
